In conjunction with the exhibition Modern Masters: A Tribute to Anne Windfohr Marion, Michael Auping, former Chief Curator of the Modern, and Andrea Karnes, current Chief Curator of the Modern, discuss the rich and generous legacy of the Modern’s longtime patron Anne Windfohr Marion. Curated by Auping, the exhibition begins with three renowned works gifted to the Museum from Marion’s collection: Arshile Gorky’s poetic The Plow and the Song, 1947; Willem de Kooning’s bold and historically significant Two Women, 1954–55; and Mark Rothko’s sublime White Band No. 27, 1954. As a scholar of Abstract Expressionism, Auping has described the gift of these paintings as “a monumental addition to the Museum’s collection, each work a classic example of the artist’s signature style.” The exhibition and talk also present major additions to the Museum’s collection in the areas of Color Field painting, Minimalism, and American and European photography of the 1980s and 1990s, of which Marion was a major supporter.

This popular series of lectures and presentations by artists, architects, historians, and critics is free and open to the public. Lectures begin at 6 pm in the Modern’s auditorium. Seating is at 5:30 pm. A livestream broadcast of the lecture will be available here.

A limited number of tickets (limit two per person) will be available for purchase ($5) from 10 am until 3 pm the day of the lecture online. Free admission tickets (limit two per person) are available at the Modern’s information desk beginning at 4 pm on the day of the lecture.  

On Tuesday nights during the lecture series, the galleries are open until 6 pm and Café Modern’s bar is open (no food service available.) Lectures will not be broadcast into the café this season.
