Winter/Spring 2015 Children's Gallery Programs at the Modern |
Drawing from the Collection for Children Two sessions of this free program are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises in relation to works in the Modern's galleries. Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited, so early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet is located at the information desk.

Wonderful Wednesdays This program for families with young children is led by a docent and includes a gallery project designed by the education department. Both the tour and project focus on selected works on view at the Modern. Registration is not required, but a sign-up sheet is provided at the information desk the day of the program. Attendance is limited; admission and supplies are free.

FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS! This program for children between the ages of 9 and 12 takes a closer look at the contemporary art in this season's FOCUS exhibitions featuring the work of artists Jules de Balincourt, RongRong&inri, and Mario García Torres. Each class spends time in the galleries looking and talking about the work before proceeding to the studio for an art activity and further discussion. Sign up early; space is limited.
Saturdays, 10 am-noon $20 per session; $15 for members (Scholarships are available. Please call 817.840.2121.)
January 17-Jules de Balincourt Participants spend time in the galleries looking at de Balincourt's paintings before proceeding to the studio for a related activity.
March 21-RongRong&inri After studying the work of RongRong&inri in the galleries, participants make large-scale landscape drawings and staged photography in response.
May 9-Mario García Torres After watching García Torres's film in the exhibition, participants work on small sculptures and shoot a short film in the studio.
Public Tours Docent-led tours of art on view at the Modern are offered Tuesday through Sunday at 2 pm. A public tour focused on architecture is available on the first Saturday of each month at 11 am. A Spanish-language tour is available on the first Sunday of each month at 2 pm. These tours do not require prior arrangements and begin in the Museum lobby.
10 Pages Free sketchbooks for children are available at the information desk. Use 10 Pages to record your ideas and inspirations while looking at works of art in the Modern's galleries.
Family Programming: Spring Break Wonders March 9-12, 2-2:45 pm The Modern is open and free to the public the Monday of Spring Break! While the museum is normally closed on Mondays, on March 9 our doors are open, admission is waived, and children can begin celebrating with the special gallery program Spring Break Wonders. Take advantage of family programming at the Modern over the course of the week while your school-aged children are on Spring Break. Each session is led by a docent and includes a gallery project designed by the education department. Both the tour and project focus on selected works in the Modern's collection. Registration is not required, but a sign-up sheet is provided at the information desk beginning at 1 pm the day of the program. Attendance is limited; admission is free.
