“The mediator between head and hands must be the heart.” This iconic line from Metropolis reveals the central message of this trailblazing science fiction epic that continues to speak to cinemagoers today. Brought to the screen by visionary German director Fritz Lang (Scarlet Street, M) and cinematographer Karl Freund (Dracula, 1931; The Mummy, 1932), Metropolis is hailed by filmmakers and critics alike as one of the most influential films ever made.

Featuring a vast, futuristic cityscape, flying cars, a wild-eyed mad scientist, a humanoid automaton, a rebellious uprising, and a final showdown on top a crumbling cathedral, modern viewers may recognize clear homages to Metropolis in such films as James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Charles Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936), Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), James Cameron’s Terminator duology, Tim Burton’s Batman (1989), and George Lucas’s Star Wars saga. Though Metropolis’s spectacular special effects are still breathtaking nearly a century later, Lang never forgets the emphasis on human drama.

This special Cowtown Movie Classics presentation features a live, electronic and instrumental original score by Austin-based composer, David DiDonato.
