Visiting Guidelines

Welcome to the Modern. The Modern is charged with protecting and preserving the artwork entrusted to our care so the community can appreciate it for years to come. Our guidelines are meant to ensure the safe and enjoyable experience of our collection and special exhibitions.

Though it is tempting to get close to the art to get a better look, please do not touch the art. Stay at least 24 inches from the artwork, or about an arm’s length away.

We offer a complimentary coat and parcel check with self-service lockers. Please check bags that are larger than 15 × 15 × 5 inches, umbrellas, and any other bulky items. We also offer complimentary small electronics lockers that include charging cables. For assistance, please ask the lobby attendant or admissions desk personnel.

We cannot allow any food or drink in the galleries, but you are welcome to finish your beverage in the lobby before entering the galleries. We also have a full-service restaurant and bar to visit before or after your gallery experience.

Children are welcome in the museum; in fact, be sure to get a free sketchbook at the admissions desk. Strollers are welcome in the galleries if pushed by an adult and larger diaper bags are secured. Occasionally, exhibitions might require us to request that strollers be parked due to large crowds or fragile artwork.

We encourage sketching and writing in the galleries; however, only pencils may be used. Sketchbooks should be no larger than 15 inches on the longest edge.

Smoking is not permitted in the museum or on museum grounds, including (but not limited to) vaping or e-cigarettes.

Firearms are not permitted on museum grounds.

Please respect museum staff. Occasionally, requests may be made by staff that are not listed above; these are in the best interest of protecting the artwork and the museum experience for other visitors. If you have questions about something specific in advance of your visit, please feel free to call us at 817.738.9215.

PHOTOGRAPHY Policies and Information

We encourage personal photography in most exhibitions and in our permanent collection. Feel free to take a quick selfie or snapshot, but please remember that others are experiencing the museum as well. Disruptive or intrusive photography is not allowed. We also do not allow tripods, camera extension devices, special equipment, and/or flash photography. If photography is not allowed, there will be a symbol on the object label or at the entrance to the exhibition. If you have a question about photography, please feel free to ask museum staff.

We do not allow portrait photography, personal or professional, in the galleries or inside the museum. We do allow personal-use portrait photography on the grounds after museum hours, but we require approval in advance to ensure approved use and to avoid scheduling conflicts. For approval, please email our information/public relations department.

Commercial-use photography of any kind requires special approval, including (but not limited to) headshots, advertising portraits, staff group portraits, or product/merchandise photography. For questions regarding commercial photography, please email our information/public relations department.
