MODERN ART MUSEUM OF FORT WORTH PRESENTS
FRAME BY FRAME—ANIMATION AT THE MODERN

For many artists working with animation, there exists an integral relationship between the process of animation itself and the story that is told. This selection of animated films, spanning ninety years, reveals how existential subjects have been elegantly approached using innovative animation techniques.

The films in this series were selected by the artist Joshua Mosley, whose work is featured in the first of the Modern’s 2008 FOCUS exhibition series. Mosley is currently Assistant Professor of Animation and Digital Media in the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. His high-definition short and sculpture installation A Vue, 2004 is on view at the Modern through February 24. He will return to the Modern on March 11 as a guest speaker for the Tuesday Evenings lecture series.

Admission is free.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed
When Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed premiered in Germany on September 23, 1926, it was hailed as the first full-length animated film. More than seventy-five years later, this enchanting film still stands as one of the great classics of animation—beautiful, mesmerizing, and utterly seductive. Taken from The Arabian Nights, the film tells the story of a wicked sorcerer who tricks Prince Achmed into mounting a magical flying horse and sends the rider off on a flight to his death. But the prince foils the magician’s plan, and soars headlong into a series of wondrous adventures.

“A masterpiece! She was born with magic hands.” — Jean Renoir

“A rapturous animated kaleidoscope! ”—Wesley Morris, San Francisco Examiner
